Maral hunt in Altai region

Photos

Altai Mountains are one of the most picturesque regions in our country. The nature here is distinct in its original beauty. These are severe mountains, crystal rivers, pristine taiga with its extraordinary diverse flora and fauna, blue lakes and Alpine meadows. Altai mountain system consists of a number of ridges. The highest peak of the Altai Mountains is Belukha Mountain (4506 meters above sea level). It is located on the Katun ridge and according to the legends is a sacred mountain.

Flora and fauna of Altai is very diverse. The most interesting objects of hunt in Altai are maral, ibex and roe deer. Traditional inhabitation of maral is mountain forests located on the border with Alpine meadows. Normally hunt is carried out from the beginning of September till December.  But the best time to hunt trophy maral is the rut season when maral stags roar calling the rivals to fight for females. That is how this extremely cautious animal reveals itself. Early in the morning a client accompanied by an experienced guide drives to the places, where grazing marals had been seen the night before. Simulating male’s roar the guide beckons the animal to the distance available for shooting.   Usually the peak of the rut season is the last ten-day period of September but this fact strongly depends on the weather conditions. Very often (in case of warming) rut period drifts in time, it can die down or pass drowsily. That is why it is recommended to have cushion of time. It is better to plan this hunt for at least 10-12 days, in this case a hunter has good chances to get precious trophy.

Maral is a strong and tough for wound animal and the shooting-range often exceeds 200-300 meters, that’s why we recommend to use a rifle with the caliber of  7 mm. minimum, better of 30-06 or .300 with good scope. In addition you can hunt the Siberian Ibex. This is also quite tough and difficult classical mountain hunt and can require a good fitness condition as well as a long shooting skill. It could be a long hiking days with glassing and stalking when the nice trophy is found.

During the hunt accommodation will be organized either in log huts or tents with stove heating. Distance trips from base camp with overnights in light tents might be organized during the hunt. If you want to get a really good trophy you ought to be sure that you are in good physical shape.

Depending on the hunting dates air temperature may vary from -5° C to +15°C. Strikingly beautiful mountains and a great hunt will provide unforgettable experience for the whole lifetime.
